This question is dependent on your life goals. If you are looking to make money, then yes. But if meaning and purpose is what you seek, then no.

It's not worth learning mechanics if you don’t have the skills. You'll waste your time. It's not going make you millionaire. It will not make you famous. And it's unlikely to change your life.

It would take you years to learn how to do everything correctly. You would still need to hire someone to fix your car if it breaks down. It's the reason most people don't bother. They find something better to do instead.

You can make a lot of money if you are looking to do well. The mechanic's profession is not the right place for you if it means that you will live a fulfilled life.

Is it important which college I go?

You're wrong. There is no difference between colleges in terms of how to get into the automobile industry. However, some schools offer better programs than others so if you're looking for something more specialized, look elsewhere.

What information do I need about car mechanics

For an auto mechanic job, you don’t have to be an expert in cars. Only you need to know how things work. Most people begin by changing brake pads and tires, before moving on to more complicated repairs.

You'll need to know how to read diagrams, understand written instructions and follow basic rules of good practice. You must also be able judge if parts need to replaced or repaired.

It's important to remember that you shouldn't attempt to repair vehicles without having received proper training and guidance. This is especially true for expensive components, such as transmissions and engines.

Although you won't have to know much about automobiles, you must be familiar with the basics of mechanical engineering as well as physics. This involves understanding how engines work and how brakes work.

It is important to realize that you must be ready for all types of situations. For example, you may find yourself working on a vehicle that has been involved in a serious accident. Additionally, you will need to have experience with handling accidents and breakdowns.

You must also be willing to learn quickly. In order to be able diagnose and fix problems, you will also need to know how to do simple maintenance tasks such tightening bolts.

How long is an automotive course?

An automotive course lasts 3 years.

The first year is spent learning about cars and theory. The second year is dedicated to practical training, where you will learn how to fix cars, drive them, and do other jobs around the car. The last year of your training is spent on practical training, where you learn how to fix real-world problems.

What type of job is there for a car mechanic?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people first think of becoming a mechanic. In fact, it's probably the easiest way to get started. You have two options: work in an existing shop or open your own.

If you plan to work in a shop, you must apply to join the union. Once accepted into the union you will be trained by the union.

Once you complete the training, it's time to get started.

You will need to register if your garage is going to be open. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

After you have registered, you will be issued a license to operate your garage.

Your license allows you to sell spare parts and make minor repairs. It will not allow you to repair major engine problems.

Apart from selling spare parts, customers will also expect you to provide guidance and advice.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who specialize in one area of the car. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealerships have the option to hire general mechanics who can take care of all aspects.

These positions may require applicants to complete specific training before being allowed on the job. This allows employers to pick the right candidates for their jobs.

Some dealerships even recruit graduates straight from university. These graduates already have a basic understanding of mechanical engineering, so they are able to learn all about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don’t have to be associated with any particular dealer. Instead, they tend to focus on providing high-quality service.

Independent garages can pay higher wages because they aren't associated with any company. These jobs generally pay better than those at dealerships.

Independent garages don't necessarily make for better work environments. Many business owners prefer to own their businesses and not delegate the responsibility to others.

You may find yourself working for long hours and not having control over the day.

Additionally, you should expect to earn lower wages if employed by a dealership.

The good news is that you can easily switch between different kinds of jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. There are many factors that affect how much you make.

It could be the type and cost of labor you use to repair your vehicle.

How To

How to become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she works in car dealerships as well as auto shops, garages, and service centers. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. The first section tests for mechanical knowledge, the second for practical skills. You will need to attend an authorized testing site in order to pass the test. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

Before becoming an automotive technician, a candidate must pass the test. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states allow technicians to become licensed right away after receiving their license. While others wait until they have had at least six years of experience as an automotive technician.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Once hired, most new employees start out working as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Some students are taught how to repair engines and replace transmission fluids. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

Once a student completes his/her apprenticeship, he/she becomes a journeyman. Journeymen typically spend four to five years learning how to install major systems, such as transmissions, differentials, steering gear, suspensions, and drive shafts. You will also learn how to repair complicated electrical components, as well as how to remanufacture engines and rebuild transmissions. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. The candidate should expect to invest thousands of money in equipment and supplies if he/she decides to start his/her shop.

The salary for an automotive technician depends on several factors, including the type of employer, location, education level, and experience. A jobless person could make an average of $20,000 annually. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $27,000 per year. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
