FAQ

How long is an automotive course?

An automotive course lasts for three years.

The first year of your training is devoted to theory. You will learn all about cars. The second year is dedicated towards practical training. This includes learning how to drive, fix engine problems, and doing other maintenance jobs around your car. The last year of your training is spent on practical training, where you learn how to fix real-world problems.

Is it worth becoming a mechanic?

This question is dependent on your life goals. If you are looking to make money, then yes. But if meaning and purpose is what you seek, then no.

It's not worth learning mechanics if you don’t have the skills. You'll waste your time. It's not going make you millionaire. You won't become famous. It is unlikely that you will be made famous.

You'd have to spend years learning how things work. This would mean that you would have to pay someone else for your car's repair. It's the reason most people don't bother. They find something better.

In conclusion, if money is your main goal, you should go ahead. If you are looking for a fulfilling life, however, then stay clear of the mechanics' industry.

What is the difference between an automotive technician and a mechanic?

These two jobs are very similar but not identical. A mechanic repairs cars and an automotive technician performs maintenance.

A mechanic must be skilled in manual dexterity and able to complete simple tasks quickly. They must also be able to diagnose problems accurately and repair them effectively.

An automotive technician needs to be more technically skilled than a mechanic. They must be able and able to read blueprints as well as use tools like drills or wrenches.

They should be able safely to perform complex procedures. They must also be familiarized in different types and electrical systems.

They must also understand the interplay of different parts.

The result is that a mechanic often earns less than an auto technician. Both careers have many options.

How To

How to become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she works at car dealerships, auto shops, garages, service centers, etc. He/she works with customers to repair their cars and trucks, ATVs or snowmobiles. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands in for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. The first section tests the ability to use mechanical knowledge. The second section tests the ability to apply practical skills. To take the test, you must visit one of the approved testing locations. These locations can be found online, or by contacting your local car dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states require technicians to be licensed immediately upon receiving their license. Other states wait until they have been employed as automotive technicians for at least six month.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs last about three years. This is when a student can learn how to do basic repairs such as changing oil, adjusting brakes and replacing tires. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. However, some schools offer evening classes if needed.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. They learn how to do complex repairs such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissives, and troubleshooting electronic components. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were almost 1.7 million available jobs in the automotive mechanic field in 2010. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

Automotive technicians' salaries depend on many factors such as the employer, whereabouts, education level and experience. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. An associate's degree earns approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $27,000 per year. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. A common trend is for salary increases to occur so a professional making less than $30,000 can reasonably expect to be earning $40,000 or more within a few years.
