What type of job is there for a car mechanic?

For car mechanics, there are three main areas for employment:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

It's where most people start to think about becoming a mechanic. This is the best way to get started. You can either work at a shop owned by someone else or set up your own business.

If you plan to work in a shop, you must apply to join the union. Once you have been accepted into the Union, you'll be given training by the union.

Once you complete the training, it's time to get started.

Register with the government if you want to open your garage. After you have registered, you will need to meet certain standards.

You will receive a license to run your garage once you have registered.

Your license allows you to sell spare parts and make minor repairs. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

Apart from selling spare parts, customers will also expect you to provide guidance and advice.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships only employ mechanics who have a specific skill set. They may be trained to replace or repair tires, or they may specialize in brakes.

However, some dealerships also hire general mechanics who can handle all aspects of car repairs.

Some positions require that applicants complete training before they can be allowed to work. This means employers can choose which candidates are best suited for their role.

Some dealerships will hire graduates straight from college. These graduates already have a basic understanding of mechanical engineering, so they are able to learn all about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don’t have to be associated with any particular dealer. Instead, they tend to focus on providing high-quality service.

Independent garages have the ability to afford higher wages, as they aren’t associated with any one company. These jobs generally pay better than those at dealerships.

However, independent garages do not necessarily offer better workplaces. Many owners prefer to control their businesses themselves, rather than delegating it to employees.

You might find yourself working long hours but having no control over what happens in the day.

Additionally, you should expect to earn lower wages if employed by a dealership.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. You can switch jobs easily if you are interested in working at a dealership. Simply ask your employer if they would be open to hiring you as a mechanic.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. Many other factors can also influence the amount you earn.

Consider, for example, what type of vehicle you are repairing and whether additional labor charges will apply.

Is it hard to be a mechanic apprentice?

It's not easy, but you learn fast, and there are many opportunities for advancement.

You must have patience and perseverance. Also, you must know how to fix trucks, cars, and motorcycles.

Customers and loved ones can place a lot of pressure on you. However, you shouldn't be forced to make difficult decisions.

If you like fixing cars, this could be a great career option. You can make a decent living and build your business.

But you may prefer another path. If this is the case, you might want to become a technician.

This means that you can use your technical knowledge to help other workers. Technicians could benefit from your technical expertise to solve problems or teach new techniques.

Another option is to become a service advisor. Here, you'll provide advice and assistance to customers when they bring their cars to a garage.

Your choice is based on what you choose to do. There are many options, so you can choose the one that suits you best.

Does it matter what college I go to?

Non, really. There's no difference between colleges regarding getting into the automotive industry. Some schools have better programs than others, so you might want to look elsewhere if your goal is something more specialized.

How To

How to become an automotive technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. You will need to attend an authorized testing site in order to pass the test. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. The process will vary depending on where an applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states allow technicians to become licensed right away after receiving their license. While others wait until they have had at least six years of experience as an automotive technician.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. New employees are usually apprentices when they first get hired. Apprenticeship programs usually last three years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Some students learn how to do advanced repairs, such as installing air filters, replacing shocks, repairing engines, and replacing transmission fluids. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen typically spend four to five years learning how to install major systems, such as transmissions, differentials, steering gear, suspensions, and drive shafts. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Many employers prefer hiring journeymen because they know the job well and understand what the customer expects.

A candidate who passes all the necessary exams and gets a license might be interested in opening his/her own business. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. On average, a jobless person could expect to earn $20,000 annually. A person with only a high-school diploma could make around $21,000 annually. An associate's degree earns approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $27,000 per year. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
