How To

How to become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. He/she works with customers to repair their cars and trucks, ATVs or snowmobiles. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

Before becoming an automotive technician, a candidate must pass the test. The process will vary depending on where an applicant lives. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeships last for three years. A student will learn to repair basic things like changing oil, adjusting brakes or replacing tires. They also learn how spark plugs are cleaned and inspect engine compartments. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Schools offer classes during business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. Journeymen also learn to fix complicated problems, such as rebuilding engines or troubleshooting electric components. Many employers prefer to hire Journeymen because they understand the job well.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 1.7 million automotive mechanic jobs were available in 2010. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

The salary for an automotive technician depends on several factors, including the type of employer, location, education level, and experience. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. An associate's degree earns approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with a bachelor’s degree made about $27,000 annually. Master's degree holders make around $32,000 annually. A common trend is for salary increases to occur so a professional making less than $30,000 can reasonably expect to be earning $40,000 or more within a few years.
