FAQ

Is it easy to get a job as an automotive mechanic?

It can be done. Many garages post their vacancies online. Many people apply simply because they think it might make them feel good. Applying for several positions and seeing if they accept student applications is a good way to get your foot into the door. If you don't know anyone working in the industry, ask your friends and relatives. You might be able to refer someone.

What length of an automotive course is it?

An automotive course lasts 3 years.

The first year of your training is devoted to theory. You will learn all about cars. The second year is dedicated towards practical training. This includes learning how to drive, fix engine problems, and doing other maintenance jobs around your car. You will spend the final year working in a local garage to gain real-world experience.

Does it matter what college I go to?

It's not true. There is no difference between colleges in terms of how to get into the automobile industry. But, there are better programs at some schools than others. Look elsewhere if you want something more niche.

What type of job is there for a car mechanic?

For car mechanics, there are three main areas for employment:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

Most people think of this as the first step to becoming a mechanic. In fact, it's probably the easiest way to get started. You can either work at a shop owned by someone else or set up your own business.

If you choose to work at a store, you need to join a union. After you are accepted to the union, you will receive training from it.

After the training, you will be ready to go and start your job.

If you plan to open your own garage you will need to register with government. You'll need to meet certain standards after you register.

After you have registered, you will be issued a license to operate your garage.

Your license allows for minor repairs and spare parts sales. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

Customers will expect you to not only sell spare parts but also provide advice and guidance.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics that specialize in one aspect of the vehicle. For instance, they may only be qualified to fix brakes or change tires.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

These positions often require applicants that they undergo special training before being allowed work. Employers are able to choose which candidates will best suit their position.

Some dealerships even recruit graduates straight from university. These graduates already know the basics of mechanical engineering and therefore have no problem learning about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don’t have to be associated with any particular dealer. Instead, they focus on high-quality customer service.

Because independent garages aren't affiliated with any company, they can afford to pay higher wages. These jobs generally pay better than those at dealerships.

However, independent garages do not necessarily offer better workplaces. Many business owners prefer to be in control of their businesses than to delegate it to employees.

So you may find yourself working long hours without having any say over what happens during the day.

It is also possible to expect lower wages than you would if working at a dealer.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. It is possible to switch between different types of jobs if your current employer would prefer you to work at a dealer.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

Finding a new job is not always easy. There are many other factors that can influence your earnings.

It could be the type and cost of labor you use to repair your vehicle.

To be a car mechanic, do you need a degree? Can I study part time?

Although it's not mandatory, a degree can help. Employers prefer candidates who have completed a full degree. It shows that you've put the effort in and have done everything possible to succeed.

But, this doesn't mean you have to stop working while studying. Some universities allow students the flexibility to finish coursework during summer vacations and resume their studies later in year. Others allow students to study part-time all year.

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To pass the test, you will need to visit an authorized testing location. These locations can be found online or at your local auto dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require that candidates attend training courses, while others permit them to learn independently. Some states allow technicians to become licensed right away after receiving their license. While others wait until they have had at least six years of experience as an automotive technician.

The apprenticeship program teaches students how to change oil, adjust brakes, replace tires, clean spark plugs, inspect engine compartments, and perform routine maintenance. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Schools offer classes during business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. You will also learn how to repair complicated electrical components, as well as how to remanufacture engines and rebuild transmissions. Many employers prefer hiring journeymen because they know the job well and understand what the customer expects.

After passing the exams, candidates may be eligible to open their own shop if they pass all requirements. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.
