FAQ

Are you a mechanic or a technician? Can I do part-time studies?

While a degree is not required, it does help. Employers are more likely to hire candidates who have completed a complete degree. This shows you have put in the work and achieved success.

But, this doesn't mean you have to stop working while studying. Some universities permit students to do coursework during summer holidays and complete their studies later in a year. Other universities permit students to take classes part-time during the school year.

Is it hard to get work as an auto mechanic?

Yes, it's possible. Many garages have vacancies that are advertised online. Many people apply because they think it will be fun. Try applying to a few jobs and seeing if the garages accept student applications. If you don't know anyone working in the industry, ask your friends and relatives. They may be happy and willing to recommend someone.

What do I need to know about car mechanics?

You don't need to know anything about cars to work as an auto mechanic. All you need to know is how to fix things. Most people start by fixing things like changing tires or fitting brake pads.

You'll need to know how to read diagrams, understand written instructions and follow basic rules of good practice. You will also need to understand how parts should be replaced or repaired.

You should not attempt to fix vehicles without proper training and guidance. This is especially true if your job involves expensive parts like transmissions or engines.

Although you won't be required to know much about cars you should have a solid understanding of the fundamentals and principles of mechanical engineering. This involves understanding how engines work and how brakes work.

It is important to realize that you must be ready for all types of situations. One example is when you could be working on a vehicle involved in a serious crash. Also, you'll need to be familiar with dealing with accidents or breakdowns.

It is important to be open to learning new skills quickly. As well as being able to diagnose problems, you'll need to be able to perform simple maintenance tasks such as tightening nuts and bolts.

What does it matter which college I attend?

You're wrong. There is no difference in the programs offered by colleges for getting into automotive work. However, some schools offer better programs than others so if you're looking for something more specialized, look elsewhere.

An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing the program, he/she must pass ASE certification. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. To pass the test, you will need to visit an authorized testing location. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. This process can vary depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

Apply to your local dealership to become an automotive technician. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

When a student has completed his/her apprenticeship, they become a journeyman. Journeymen usually spend four to five year learning how to install major systems like transmissions, differentials steering gear, suspensions, drive shafts, and steering gear. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Because they have a good understanding of the job and what customers expect, many employers prefer to hire journeymen.

Once a candidate passes the required exams and is granted a license, they might consider opening their own shop. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there were nearly 1.7 million jobs available for automotive mechanics in 2010. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that this number would rise by 18% from 2009 to 2020. The candidate should expect to invest thousands of money in equipment and supplies if he/she decides to start his/her shop.

A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. A common trend is for salary increases to occur so a professional making less than $30,000 can reasonably expect to be earning $40,000 or more within a few years.
